About Us

Mission Statement

Edinburg Dance Theatre's mission is to provide a world-class ballet and dance experience to children and adults of the region. Its mission includes representing the broader trajectory of community life through compelling stories shown on stage. Integrated into the day-to-day skill building specific to classical ballet and other dance genres, young EDT artists cultivate their storytelling capacity, as they are tasked with the responsibility of telling stories that are aesthetically beautiful, uplifting, and hopeful. EDT builds dancers who perform, and whose performance is inspired by the grander purpose of moving minds and hearts of audiences.

About Us

Edinburg Dance Theater is the realization of a mother's dream, a woman raised during the Great Depression in a village in rural South Texas. As a child Irma learned to love the arts from her ranch-hand father. Irma recounts, "Daddy's job included taking the ranch owner to the opera in San Antonio. He'd wait in the truck as the owner and his wife experienced the opera. And on the drive home, Daddy listened to them recount the magic of the show. Through those stories, I fell in love with the arts." When Irma attended secretarial school, she purchased a black and white television, and was captivated by shows such as Lawrence Welk. "Television brought Daddy's stories to life," she says. One day, Irma determined she'd give her children the experiences she only knew vicariously.

In 1968, Irma enrolled her daughters in ballet class in Edinburg. Though of meager financial means, she gave her daughters an arts education. Today, her daughters are college degreed dance teachers; three grandchildren dance professionally, and hundreds of children reap the artistic benefits of young Irma's dream. Two daughters direct the dance studio, and Irma administers an enterprise that offers quality dance education to local children.

With other arts patrons, Irma and her daughters founded Edinburg Dance Theatre (EDT), a nonprofit that's a critical part of the local arts and storytelling scene, as it produces annual productions of The Nutcracker, Peter and the Wolf, and a mixed repertoire production of Mexican and original contemporary choreography, among other genres.
